So far, the total number of entries for the 2018 edition stands at 1,245 runners, a 51% increase compared to the 824 participants registered this time last year.

The Gran Canaria Marathon and Cajasiete have renewed their sponsorship agreement until 2020. This means that the financial institution will continue to be the race´s main sponsor for the next three editions.

Francisco Armas, manager of the Temporary Business Association (TBA) organizing the Gran Canaria Marathon, as well as Cajasiete´s director of Institutional Relations and Communication, José Manuel Garrido, presented the new agreement at the Gran Canaria Arena. They were joined by the Vice President and Councillor for Sports of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, Angel Víctor Torres, as the race is considered one of the Cabildo´s Main Events, and part of the Gran Canaria European Island of Sport project.

Torres congratulated the organizing TBA on the event´s progress and thanked Cajasiete for their continuing sponsorship.

The Councillor for Sports stated that the race was achieving “figures that were unthinkable a few years ago.” So far, the total number of entries for the 2018 edition has reached 1,245 runners, a 51% increase compared to the 824 registered this time last year. In the main distance, the Marathon, the number of runners signed up is 418, compared to 279 at the end of June last year.

Both the Half Marathon as well as the 10 kilometer race have also broken records. The Half Marathon has 438 registered runners already, 101 more than this time last year, while the 10-kilometer race has 389 runners signed up, compared to the 208 in June 2016.

Furthermore, Torres is confident that the Cajasiete Gran Canaria Marathon 2018 has not only strenghthened its position among the top 10 marathons in the country, but is ranked highly in this national ranking. He also reminded those present that the race “continues to grow and break records year after year”.

Cajasiete´s director of Institutional Relations and Communications, José Manuel Garrido, stated that renewing the sponsorship agreement for the next editions was “a real honour” and added that, “it is not just about putting our name to the race, but of being involved in and working with the event.” Garrido explained that the negotiations with the organizing TBA were “straightforward” because they share common objectives, “like a culture that rewards hard work, as well as promoting Gran Canaria economically and socially”.

Francisco Armas, manager of the Temporary Business Association (TBA) organizing the Gran Canaria Marathon, was equally satisfied with the agreement reached and detailed the work that the organization was carryiong out to boost the Cajasiete Gran Canaria Marathon´s national and international profile.

The TBA has carried out different promotional campaigns in the marathons of Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, San Sebastian, Rome, Hannover, Paris, Hamburg, Vienna, Prague or Stockholm, amongst other large cities. These campaigns will continue throughout the year in order to increase the race´s visibility as well as the number of runners taking part.

Likewise, Armas explained that they are working closely with the City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to coordinate the necessary changes to the race´s circuit as a result of the works that, over the next few years, will go on in the city due to the MetroGuagua.

THE ORGANIZING COMMITTEE OF THE CAJASIETE GC MARATÓN 2018 GUARANTEES A ONE LAP COURSE

The race´s new route will be compatible with the construction works on the Metroguagua, a new high capacity transport service, and will have all the necessary certifications from the IAAF and the RFEA

So far, over 2,300 runners  have signed up for the 2018 edition, a 55% increase compared to the almost 1,500 runners registered in October 2016

The Cajasiete Gran Canaria Marathon´s organizing committee can guarantee that it will keep the single lap circuit, despite the necessary changes made as a result of the construction works on the Metroguagua that the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Council is carrying out.

After the organization learned last summer that the new public transportation project would affect the circuit, approved in 2016, the race director Orlando Montesdeoca began to take the necessary steps to design a one-lap circuit compatible with the construction work on the Metroguagua.

Since then the organization, headed by Grupo Juan Armas Sport (GJA Sport), has been holding regular meetings with representatives of the city council, Local Police, Cabildo de Gran Canaria, General Directorate of Traffic and other coordination and security agencies involved in the event, in order to define the final circuit.

Montesdeoca points out that they are being “meticulous” when defining the new circuit, so that it keeps its original one lap format, affecting as little as possible the city´s communications. Furthermore, keeping the circuit to one lap improves its speed, effectiveness and boosts its appeal for tourists.

The organization hopes to have the approval of the Local Police of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, who will ultimately give the final circuit the go-ahead, as soon as possible. Following that, they wil seek the relevant approval of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) and the Spanish Athletics Federation (RFEA).

REGISTRATIONS RISE SIGNIFICANTLY

Regarding the number of runners taking part, the organization is optimistic considering the number of people who have signed up so far. Compared to the same month of the previous year, total participation has increased by 55%, which means over 2,300 participants to date, a figure that did not reach 1,500 registrations in October 2016.

By distances, the 42,195 kilometers race has over 650 participants, 30% more than the same time last year, which was under 500.

The Half Marathon has almost reached the 1,000 registered runners mark, compared to just over 500 that had signed up in October 2016, meaning a 60% increase. There is also an increase in the 10-kilometer race, with over 700 runners, a 30% growth compared to less than 500 runners signed up a year ago.

The registrations for the Cajasiete Gran Canaria Marathon are still open, and it will be, without a doubt, the greatest sporting event to be held in the city on January the 21st, 2018.

HPS will continue to be the Cajasiete Gran Canaria Marathon 2018´s official medical service

HPS recommends runners undergo a stress test prior to the race, especially those who wish to know how fit they really are, so as to take part safely.

Éric Curbelo, who plays for Las Palmas Atlético FC, carried out his stress test and was looking forward to running the Cajasiete GC Marathon.

The Hospital Perpetuo Socorro (HPS) and Cajasiete Gran Canaria Marathon have renewed their commitment to the new edition, which will be held in 2018. The company is once again the race´s official medical service for the second year running.

The Head of the race´s Medical Services Team, as well as of HPS´s Sports Unit, Clara Quintana, explained that, in this edition, they will increase the event´s medical coverage to provide a better service, as they anticipate an increase in participants for this new edition of the Cajasiete Gran Canaria Marathon.

HPS ´s main priority is to guarantee the runners´ safety during the event. In this regard, she pointed out that hospital tents will be set up at various points along the route with doctors, nurses and assistants ready to attend to any incident that may occur different points throughout the race.

The definite layout of the medical coverage will be established as soon as the course is defined, which is pending the approval of the Local Police of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

STRESS TEST

The Hospital Perpetuo Socorro has one of the most comprehensive Sports Medicine services in the Canary Islands, thus meeting the needs of both professional and amateur athletes. One of the most popular services are the stress tests, ideal for all those who want to have greater insight into their fitness, whether they are new to sports or already have an active lifestyle.

In fact, Éric Curbelo, who plays for Las Palmas Atlético FC, carried out his stress test, and supervised by Clara Quintana, head of the Sports Medicine Unit. The player knows the how important these tests are, as they let you know your pulmonary and cardiac capacity, and was looking forward to running the Cajasiete GC Marathon 10K race, as long as his sports commitments let him.

HPS recommends all those who start taking part in events such as the Cajasiete Gran Canaria Marathon undergo the stress test, as “a way to run in the event safely,” concluded Quintana.

The RFEA can guarantee that the Cajasiete Gran Canaria Marathon will be added to its official calendar

The Spanish athletics federation says the race will recover its certification as soon as the outstanding amounts are paid.

The temporary business association (TBA) that puts the Cajasiete Gran Canaria Marathon together guarantees that the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation (RFEA) has certified it will regain its place in the official calendar as soon as the outstanding amounts are paid. The organizing team of the Gran Canaria Marathon can confirm that it will not lose its federative rights as a result of this delay, which is not due to any non-payment by the Cabildo

The amount corresponds to the license the TBA pays the Federation for each runner, which adds up to a total of 21,967 euros. The Cajasiete Gran Canaria Marathon will be able to obtain the relevant certifications from the RFEA, once this amount is paid.

The TBS`s managing director, Francisco Armas, is in touch with the RFEA and insists that this will not affect the organization of the event. One of the next steps to address with the RFEA is the approval of the new route, as there have been some changes to last year´s circuit as a result of the works on the Metroguagua in the Gran Canaria capital.

The organization has highlighted that they still need the Local Police of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to approve the propose route. Once this requirement is fulfilled the RFEA will certify the Cajasiete Gran Canaria Marathon´s new, one lap layout for its three distances.

POSITIVE EXPECTATIONS

Expectations about the number of registrations are high. The organizing team has pointed out that the amount of runners signed up at this point is higher than those registered at the same point last year. So, they predict the number of runners taking part in this new edition of the Cajasiete Gran Canaria Marathon will grow in all distances.

The organization continues to work towards bringing this sports festival back to the Island on the 21st of January.

The aim is to raise awareness of the Island´s unique winter climate, ideal for running marathons.

Part of the Cajasiete Gran Canaria Marathon 2018 organizing team travelled to Valencia, which was holding its Marathon. The aim was to promote the Gran Canaria Marathon at the Expo Deporte Valencia, which is held during the sports event.

With this, not only is the Cajasiete Gran Canaria Marathon´s profile raised further, but it also encourages national and international participation, attracting new fans and raining awareness of the Island´s unique winter climate, which makes it ideal for running marathons.

Many fans approached the Cajasiete GC Marathon stand, interested in taking part in the race, as well as good friends, such as the Clinimagen team, from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, who travelled to Valencia to participate in the sports festival.

The organization is still working on putting together and improving the new Cajasiete Gran Canaria Marathon, a race athletic fans love and collaborate with. What´s more, the registration forecasts are positive and it is expected that in 2018 the number of runners will again beat participation records, for both local as well as foreign athletes.

THE CAJASIETE GC MARATHON 2018 RELEASES ITS NEW, ONE LAP CIRCUIT

The Organization highlights that the new circuit is faster and flatter than last year´s

Over 1,300 runners have already signed up for the race, practially doubling the amount registered last year

The Cabildo de Gran Canaria´s Sports Councillor, Ángel Víctor Torres, and the manager of the temporary business association (TBA) organizaing the event, Francisco Armas, presented the Cajasiete Gran Canaria Marathon´s new circuit for 2018. A new and improved circuit has been laid out as a result of the inconveniences the building of the Metroguagua caused to last year´s route.

Both Torres and Armas stressed that the new circuits for the three distances improve the flow of runners, as well as cause the least amount of inconveniences possible for the city´s traffic. The new route will reduce the race´s impact around San José, Alcaravaneras and the Navy Base.

Torres stressed that this is a “better” circuit than last year, in which runners, among other things, run less kilometers along the Avenida Marítima and, therefore, are less exposed to the wind. Runners will now race through more sheltered areas such as Vegueta, “making the race more attractive for tourists” he added.

Armas, on the other hand, explained that the new layout is “somewhat faster and flatter than the previous one, helping the race and the city´s traffic to coexist”. The manager of the organizing TBA explained that, as soon as they knew the impact the building of the Metroguagua would have on the previous route, they have been working hand in hand with the Cabildo and City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to redefine a one lap circuit which guarantees the safety of all the runners.

All the security services involved in the race have agreed on the new modifications, such as the City´s Local Police Department, Civil Traffic Guard, National Police, Civil Protection or Fire Department of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, among others.

PARTICIPATION

While presenting the new route, the Sports Councillor noted the increase in the number of people taking part in the Marathon. He underlined that both this year´s and last years races saw significant increases. As it stands, the number of marathon runners is at 1,301, a figure that practically doubles the total number registered in the 2016 race.

Likewise, the amount of runners from abroad has already hit  758, which is almost 60 percent of all those taking part in the 42K race. Torres explained that the data suggests that only 8 percent of foreigners repeat the marathon, “meaning we will have some 700 foreign athletes who will visit Gran Canaria for the first time to run the marathon”.

Armas, meanwhile, said they are still trying to hit the 2,000 runners mark, knowing that it is “ambitious, but hoping, at least, to be as close as possible to that figure.”

The finishers of the last edition place the Cajasiete Gran Canaria Marathon in tenth position in the country´s ranking. Not only is it in the ‘top ten’ , but it is the highest growing marathon in terms of number of participants reaching the Marathon´s  finish line .

The Sports Councillor concluded that we were on the “right track” for the race to continue to grow in quality and international visibility. He also thanked Cajasiete, the main sponsor of the event, for their support as well as all the other private companies that support the race.

The non-competitive and free race aims to highlight the importance of access to sports and an active lifestyle for all.

On the 20th of January, the Las Canteras beachfront as well as the area around the Parque de la Música will once again swell with colorful shirts

The Vice President and Sports Councilor of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, Ángel Víctor Torres, as well as the Councilor for Social Policy and Accessibility, Elena Máñez, and the manager of the Cajasiete Gran Canaria Marathon temporary business association (TBA), Francisco Armas, presented the 3K Gran Canaria Accesible, the most inclusive event to be held on the 20the of January, as part of the events that will take place during the weekend of the Cajasiete Gran Canaria Marathon 2018.

Once again, this race aims to highlight how important it is to have access to sports as well as stress the benefits of an active lifestyle for everyone. Torres highlighted the “spirited and cheerful” nature of the event, since there is no other event that brings together so many people as the weekend of the Cajasiete GC Marathon, and the 3K Gran Canaria Accesible “is a party where everyone is invited “

At the same time, Máñez pointed out how the race has developed its own identity, year after year. “It is really satisfying to see that the 3K Gran Canaria Accessible has become an important part of the Cajasiete GC Marathon,” she stated.

The head of Social Policy, who will take part once again in this non-competitive race, added that this event manages to create “a festive and sporting atmosphere in which we all feel part of the marathon´s festivities”. Torres and Máñez encouraged everyone to participate in this free and inclusive race.

The manager of the TBA, as well as the Juan Armas Sport Group (GJA Sport), reminded everyone that registrations will be open on the Cajasiete GC Marathon website, until the  12th of January or once registrations have reached 5,000 . “Maybe there are not enough spots for all those who would like to take part ” Armas said, seeing how popular this race is every year. Last year the race almost reached this figure, a great success for an event that floods Las Canteras with color every year.

Each runner will have their bib number and running shirt in one of the five colors available – orange, red, turquoise, royal blue and yellow – and will be given a breakfast picnic at the end of the race.

This year’s circuit is the same as last year´s, starting and finishing in the Parque de la Musica. In addition, this year there won´t be any vehicles parked on the streets which will improve the runners´ experience.

The manager of the TBA Cajasiete GC Marathon, Francisco Armas, explained that another of this year´s innovations will be the Vicente Ferrer Foundation which will be providing entertainment during the race.

The 3K Gran Canaria Accesible will gather thousands of people around the Parque de la Música on the 20th of January, to celebrate the most inclusive sports festival as well as the Cajasiete Gran Canaria Marathon.

The Cajasiete Gran Canaria Marathon 2018 and the III Anantapur Ultramarathon will work together in the 3K Gran Canaria Accesible. The manager of the temporary business association (TBA) that organizes the Cajasiete GC Marathon, Francisco Armas, as well as Ana Cárdenes, who represents Vicente Ferrer Foundation on the Island, and the founder of the Anantapur Ultramarathon, Juan Manuel Viera, signed an agreement to bolster their charities in one of the poorest and most underpriviledged areas of South India.

The Vicente Ferrer Foundation is taking part in the 3K Gran Canaria Accesible, held on the 20th of January, by organizing the race´s entertainment. Their presence at the race will also highlight the work they do in Anantapur as well as “twin” both events, which take place on the same day.

The III Anantapur Ultramarathon is a charity relay race held in Anantapur, South India, from the 19th to the 26th of January in aid of the Vicente Ferrer Foundation. The charity initiative ‘1km1life’ fights poverty with a life-changing bib, where everyone can take part either by collaborating with, or sponsoring, the event.

The Anantapur Ultramarathon 1km1vida was created by Juan Manuel Viera, a Canarian ultrarunner and volunteer for the Vicente Ferrer Foundation who, in 2015, decided to start this charity sports challenge. Viera set out to run a kilometer for each sponsor he managed to get and so raise awareness of the poverty in India as well as to spread this initiative so that the rest of society can join in.

76 runners, in teams of 4, will run the 170km of the III edition of the Anantapur Ultramarathon. On this occasion, the goal is to rebuild the village of Yerragunta with housing with electricity, drinking water or roads, as well as a school for 36 impoverished families. A total of 135 runners, 59 women and 76 men, will wrap up their preparation to face this challenge in the best possible shape and with the aim of improving their personal bests.

The Entrerunners program is still getting ready for the great Cajasiete Gran Canaria Marathon 2018. The specific training sessions for the different distances in the event face their last weeks before they take to the start line. A total of 135 runners, 59 women and 76 men, will finish their preparation, which has been run by sports specialists, to face this challenge in their best possible shape and with the aim of reaching their personal bests.

45 runners have trained for the different distances with an approximate ratio of one coach for every 12 athletes. In this way, training was as personalised as possible, taking into account the different ages and physical condition within the group, but all focusing on a common goal.

Entrerunners works on aspects such as conditioning, technique, balance or strength. In addition, the program also includes sessions on nutrition or sports psychology. In short, it is a multidisciplinary training program that guarantees the runners´ physical safety, helping them enjoy the race and finish it to the best of their abilities.

Entrerunners prepared a 20 week course in which the number of work sessions varies according to the distance in which they will take part in. The training sessions are carriedin different sports centres on the island, mostly in the capital of Gran Canaria. Many of the athletes in the program have participated in the three editions of Entrerunners, which has helped them to improve their objectives and step up a distance in each edition, starting at 10 kilometers, then the half marathon and, finally, signing themselves up, this edition, to the 42K.

Entrerunners was set up as a space for everyone to get fit, regardless of the initial capabilities. A philosophy where healthy lifestyle habits and sports are valuable life tools. What everyone have in common is the desire, the effort and the enthusiasm to prepare their objectives for the Cajasiete Gran Canaria Marathon, and that if something stands out among the participants it is that, beyond the training, Entrerunners has shaped a group of friends united by sport. In short, a great team.
